FTimes-STT Report, Feb 27

Victims who have suffered human rights violations from Finnish companies operating abroad are faced with challenges in accessing judicial proceedings in Finland.

The findings were revealed by a latest study commissioned by the Institute of International Economic Law, the ministry of Employment and the Economy, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Victims who have suffered ill treatment in the hands of Finnish companies abroad can take action against the companies in Finland.

However, usually, as a result of lack of information, this becomes difficult for the the victims, said the report.

The study, however, said that direct human rights violations by Finnish companies are still rare.

Usually, problems are manifested within the companies' subcontractors and subsidiaries where the parent company has little influence.

The rapporteurs recommended further clarification on how victims could access Finnish courts, and what requirements would be required to hold the parent company liable for the violation by its subsidiary.
