The centenary celebration of the Finnish rangers’ military training begins in earnest today in Hohenlockstedt, northern Germany.

Trained in Germany during the First World War, the rangers played a significant role in the Finnish Civil War in the spring of 1918. Later, the rangers’ contributions were crucial for an independent Finland creating its own defence forces.

During World War II, many rangers were leaders in the Finnish army.

In Hohenlockstedt, the celebration of the Finnish rangers’ training includes, among other things, a worship ceremony, a wreath-laying, and a festival. Hundreds of participants of the centenary celebration have travelled from Finland, including a delegation of about 120 from the Finnish armed forces.

The Guards Band as well as about 30 conscripts from all over Finland has also come to celebrate.

Participants to the centenary festival include, among others, Parliamentary Defence Committee Chairman Jussi Niinistö and Commander of Finnish Armed Forces Jarmo Lindberg
