Incidents of motorists driving under the influence of alcohol is continuing to fall, although the number of motorists under the influence of drugs has increased, according to the information relayed by the police, said Finnish Transport Safety Agency-Trafi.

The number of motorists driving with blood alcohol content measured at more than 0 mg/ml but less than 0.5 mg/ml has again started to rise, said Trafi.

A total of 22 per cent of all drivers apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol were at the same time driving under the influence of drugs.

A decade ago, the corresponding proportion was 11 per cent.

The number of female motorists driving under the influence of alcohol has also continued to rise.

According to Trafi, the use of alcohol interlock condition should be increased.

Similarly, a parliamentary committee in a statement on Tuesday advocated for increased use of alcohol interlock.
