Biometric identification and a database for Saimaa ringed seals are being developed.

The objective of the project is aimed at monitoring more closely the life of the seals.

The biometric passports project is being undertaken at the Lappeenranta University of Technology.

The passport is generated with the aid of intelligent computing and image processing of individual seal for pattern.

"The seal could be in any position, so we need to create a position-independent computer vision identification application," said Heikki Kälviäinen, a Professor of Computer Science at Lappeenranta University of Technology.

Currently, the identification of ringed seals is done manually with the use of transmitters mounted on seals.

The procedure is time consuming and difficult, and the transmitters could interfere with the ringed seals.
