The defence ministers of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden on Tuesday signed the first Nordefco defence equipment cooperation to intensify cooperation among the Nordic countries and create opportunities for joint defence procurement and projects.

Two or more of the countries party to the treaty can ratify the agreement in times of peace or crisis. The treaty is, however, subject to approval by the parliaments of the respective countries.

Carl Haglund, the Minister of Defence refereed to the agreement as a concrete example of close defence cooperation among the Nordic countries.

The treaty will also improve research and technology as well as increase the cost effectiveness of procurement, said Haglund in a statement released by the Ministry of Defence.

Furthermore, the purpose of the sub-agreement is to harmonise the regulatory requirements, improve the compatibility of defence equipment as well as the conditions that ensure procurement for the countries bound by the agreement.

The treaty can also be sanctioned bilaterally with Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
