Olga Mertaniemi, a 16-year-old school girl from Oulu, was honoured by the Finnish Red Cross on Tuesday.

Mertaniemi was handed a first aid accolade by the organisation following her heroic act that saved the life of a boy.

The upper secondary school girl rescued a 17-year-old boy who had suffered a heart attack on a road. Following the incident which took place in Oulu in February, Mertaniemi stopped and immediately began to resuscitate the boy.

Mertaniemi said training in first aid skills had been conducted in her school not long ago and were still fresh in her memory during her life-saving deed.

The Finnish Red Cross also honoured Oulun Lyseon Lukio, an upper secondary school in Oulu, in recognition for reinforcing first aid skills among young people.

This is the first time the accolade has gone to an institution of learning.

The Finnish Red Cross has called for teaching of first aid skills to be made compulsory in the basic education curriculum.
