Rape cases reported to the police last year was the highest ever in the 2000s, reported Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

A total of 939 cases of rape, aggravated rape and attempted rape were reported to the police in 2014.

The increase in the rape cases reports could partly be attributed to legislative amendment which expanded the definition of rape.

Acts which were previously considered as coerced sexual intercourse have been viewed as rape from September, 2014.

Hannu Niemi, senior researcher at National Research Institute of Legal Policy, in an interview with Helsigin Sanomat disputed that the legislative change could explain the huge increase in the number of rape reports filed to the police.

"Rape case could have happened more than in the past or people have reported the cases more actively," said Niemi.

According to Niemi, the increase of rape case in the long run could be explained by the fact the population of foreigners has grown.

Meanwhile, five miscreants suspected of raping a woman in a commuter train in Tapanila on March 9 have been remanded.

The Helsinki District Court on Friday remanded the five suspects in suspicion of aggravated rape. The suspects are aged between 15 and 18 years.

The woman got off from the train a quarter past nine in the evening at Tapanila. The group of the boys followed the woman after the incident in the train and continued harassing the woman. The boys are also suspected of raping the woman near Tapanila railway station.

The police have confirmed that the suspects have been talking about the events but none has given in to the allegations.

The police are still appealing for witnesses.
