A recent doctoral thesis on mussels indicated that chemicals dumped in the sea have a substantial impact on the health of marine organisms in the northern Baltic region.

The hazardous chemicals come from the waste water from the cities, discharges from rivers as well from maritime traffic.

The chemicals’ concentration levels were measured from samples taken from Turku, Porvoo, Helsinki and from near Sundsvall.

The mussels were collected from a clean area and were observed for a period between one to four months in a caged area.
