A rising demand for cannabis increases the risks of its cultivation being shifted from homes to the hands of professional criminals.

According to a recent study, cannabis grown at home is typically for personal use.  But, “There is a risk of professional criminals also beginning to grow cannabis. This is the case, for example, in Holland,” says Pekka Hakkarainen, THL research professor.

National Police Board Inspector Juha Henttala says it is common nowadays to find growing places while investigating other crimes.

“Growers busted by the police usually have a criminal background, the extent and severity of which varies greatly. We have, however, also seen that the cultivation of cannabis is associated with other serious crimes. This is not a new phenomenon,” says Henttala.
