A third of Finns want the next government to intervene more vigorously than its predecessor in the abuse of social security.

According to a Foundation for Municipal Development survey, 65 per cent of the respondents want the government to intervene only to some extent in the abuse.

The respondents were presented with 40 objectives and were asked how they would like the incoming government to act on these objectives.

The vast majority of Finns, as reflected by 70 per cent of the respondents, want the government to have a tighter grip on safeguarding the social welfare and health care.

Almost a similar number of respondents would want the government to put a greater emphasis on safeguarding local government finances.

The majority of the respondents also hope that public services should be reformed or made more effective.

However, only three per cent of the respondents would want the government to help the struggling economies in the EU.

The survey was carried out by TNS Gallup in February and interviewed 1,022 people. The margin of error was close to +/-3.
