A wartime explosive caused an alarm in Jyväskylä on Monday afternoon when a civilian brought wartime cartridges to the police station in the Urhonkatu Street.

The explosive, however, turned out to be a harmless wartime smoke grenade.

The civilian had brought cartridges to the police station as had been agreed. However, it turned out that there was also a smoke grenade among the cartridges.

The police took the explosive to an embankment at the police building, and also cordoned off a street leading to the police station.

The police also informed occupants of buildings near the police station to avoid being around the windows and other areas considered hazardous due to potential risks.

The situation prompted the police to seek assistance from the Defence Forces which arrived and took away the explosive.

The police have reinstated that weapons, ammunitions and explosives should not be carried anywhere, instead, one should call the emergency number 112.

The police have not opened any criminal investigation into the incident.
