A company which promises to bring back abducted children to their home country operates in the country, reported the Finnish language daily Turun Sanomat.

According to the report, the Norway-based company Scandinavian Childrescue Services, which operates under the name Suomen Erikoisturvaryhmä Oy (Special Security Group-SSG) in Finland, has a long tradition.

The company is involved in capture operations aimed at safe return of a child abducted without permission by an ex-spouse who does not have full custody of the child.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Bureau of Investigation-NBI both expressed their reservations regarding such operations to the newspaper.

The operations that involve capture of the child is not in the interest of the child, pointed out Henna Harju, a lawyer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Affairs Unit.

Similarly, Senior Inspector Lars Henriksson from NBI told the newspaper that such operations involve a lot of risks.

“You have to keep in mind how the child’s other parent and the state authorities would react when the situation ensues,” Henriksson was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

According to the police, about 15 children are abducted in the country and taken abroad every year.

Usually, the children are successfully found by the authorities. However, getting them back is not guaranteed.

According to SSG Operations Manager Mikko Salmi, the operation which involves capture of the child is the last option.

“There are situations in which the authorities cannot help. The company also requires the parent who is in Finland to have full custody of the child,” Salmi is quoted as saying.

In addition, the child must be willing to come back to Finland, he added.
