Last year, the number of life sentences was 203, while in 2013 it was 208, said the report.
The number of people sentenced to life shoot in the 1990s as a result of changes in psychiatric assessment policy which saw more convicts culpable of the offences, said Ilppo Alatalo, a senior researcher from the Criminal Sanctions Agency, to the newspaper.
“Presently all the life imprisonment convicts have been convicted during this period of new interpretation. There is no longer a new ‘growth potential’, rather the figure corresponds pretty much to the annual murder levels,” said Alatalo.
According to Alatalo, the number of people sentenced to life imprisonment is set to remain constant in the future.
