A citizens' initiative bill on the deportation of foreigners found guilty of crimes will progress to the parliament as it has reached the required number of 50,000 signatures.

The initiative proposed deportation of foreigners guilty of serious offences regardless of the length of prison sentence.

Exception to deportation would only be made if the deportation would violate international agreements.

The initiative was launched by Jarno Rosvall, a native of Helsinki, and the signature collection started in March.

The support for the initiative gathered pace in February after headlines of murder, the suspect of which was said to have used an interpreter during his processing.

The news about the initiative reaching the 50,000 mark was first run by Savon Sanomat.
