FTimes – STT Report, April 22

The chair of Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP), also the prime minister, Alexander Stubb, on Tuesday said his party will take a hard line in potential government negotiations.

Stubb said getting the country’s economy to rise again requires difficult economic adjustment measures.

The Kokoomus continues to insist four billion euros in government spending and a two billion euro cut in municipal spending. However, the time frame for the cuts is no longer than four years.

“For us it is not important at which point (cuts) will be realised. The important thing is that we say immediately at the beginning what kind of path we are heading to,” Stubb said.

According to Stubb, the entire picture of the economic situation must be taken into account.
The Kokoomus’s policy, according to Stubb, is to reduce the income tax by about two billion euros, in case a moderate wage determination solution can be agreed.

“This all depends on the government programme and the negotiations,” said Stubb, adding that the chair of Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party), Juha Sipilä, has promised to visit the social contract.

According to Stubb, his party is smarting from the loss of seven seats in the elections.

He said he has led the Kokoomus for 10 months and had been elected to usher in the final agenda of the party as well as the previous government.

Stubb said now is perhaps the time to build the party based on his vision, but warned that it would take time.
