Juha Sipilä, the chair of Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) who is leading unofficial discussions on forming the government, on Wednesday said that a few options for forming the government have already proven unlikely.

“Surely, there were a lot of options. A few options are now less likely to happen,” Sipilä told reporters in Helsinki.

The Centre Party leader, however, confirmed that there were a lot of options available. “Yes, I have established quite a good picture of which collaboration works and which one does not.”

According to Sipilä, for instance, Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) chair Antti Rinne informed him that SDP is not ready to enter the same government with the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP).

“All the parties are still involved in the discussions and there are a number of options for the basis of forming the government,” Sipilä said.

The ongoing negotiations, according to him, have not yielded any redline issues but revealed there are some painful areas.

Sipilä, however, refused to shed light on what were the painful points. “These are confidential discussions.”

Sipilä said he has met all the leaders of the political parties except Suomen Kristillisdemokraatit (Christian Democrats of Finland) chair Päivi Räsänen.

The two leaders are scheduled to meet on Thursday.

Sipilä said so far the discussions have focused on issues of trust but some big issues also have been deliberated on.

The Centre Party chief’s recent programme has been tight, as he has also met leaders of interest groups with whom he has discussed the possibility of a social contract.
