More than 20,000 bicycles were stolen last year in the country.

The National Police Board has warned that bicycle theft begins when the cycling season kicks off.

“Normally, bicycles are stolen outside public places, for instance, outside the bus station or the train station. Bicycles are also often stolen from the house yards and stores,” said Police Superintendent Tommi Reen.

The police have advised that the best protection is offered by using a U-shaped lock and locking the wheel to a solid body.

The police also estimate that ordinary citizens buy most of the stolen bicycles. One can be charged for buying stolen goods either intentionally or negligently.
