The alcohol limit for drivers in Åland Islands is planned to be reduced  from 0.2 milligrams of alcohol in every 100 millilitres of blood from the current limit of 0.5 milligrams, reported Finnish language daily Turun Sanomat.

In practice, the change would mean that alcohol cannot be taken at all before driving.

According to the newspaper, from the start of next year, drink driving of 0.2-0.5 milligrams will lead to a 200 hundred euro spot fine in the region.

At the same time, an aggravated drink driving limit will be set at 0.8 milligrams from the current 1.2 milligrams.

The change would also mean that two practices would exist in the country. The current drink driving legislation in the island is in line with mainland Finland.

According to Teijo Ristola, a former police boss in Åland Islands, the accuracy of 0.2 milligrams limit is difficult to ascertain even with the help of a precision breathalyser.
