He defeated Timo Soini, the chair of Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) by a staggering 194 votes to one out of the 200 votes.

Seven lawmakers abstained whereas a couple of MP's managed to sneak out before voting began.

Soini, however, was elected the first deputy speaker and got 185 votes, while Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP) lawmaker Ben Zyskowicz was elected the second deputy speaker with 193 votes.

Sipilä said, among other things, that it was very positive that two MP's from immigrant background have been elected to the new parliament.

He said public confidence in political decision-making is on the test.

On Tuesday, Sipilä presented 15 questions to the parliamentary groups. Sipilä will use the answers to form the basis of the next government.

Among other things, Sipilä posed the question regarding the parties’ position with regard to fiscal adjustments, the means and the time frame to achieve debt cuts.

Sipilä expects a written response from the parties on the eve of May Day at 2 O'clock at the latest.

More specific discussions will take place during the weekend and on Monday.

Bilateral discussions between Sipilä and each party have been booked for Monday. The basis for a new government is expected to be clear on 6th or 7th May.

Each group will decide on the publication of their responses, said the chair of the Keskusta parliamentary group Kimmo Tiilikainen after a meeting of the parliamentary groups.

In addition to the questions, Sipilä proposed two entries to be made in the government programme.

The first one outlines the government's opposition to Finland's increasing responsibilities in the euro crisis. The second states that the government operates comprehensively and ambitiously towards attainment of an international climate agreement.
