The development has been confirmed by, among others, the Swedish-language newspapers Vasabladet and Österbottens Tidning.
According to the newspapers, this means that after the turn of the year, there will no longer be one remaining Swedish-speaking only municipality.
In addition to Närpiö, the only Swedish-speaking municipalities were Luoto (Larsmo) and Korsnäs both of which became bilingual at the beginning of this year.
According to the newspapers, the reason for the change is financial.
Municipalities may receive language-based subsidies. The move to become bilingualism can bring approximately two million euros to Närpiö.
