According to the newspaper, Finland could participate in the operation to combat human smugglers in Libya, for example, by inspecting ships. The Finnish Defence Forces have mapped out the ways in which Finland could participate in the operation.
The EU is expecting a decision on the operation on Monday. According to the newspaper, the EU is also expecting a UN Security Council mandate and a request from the Libyan government.
Finland’s participation requires the approval of the president, the government’s foreign and security committees, as well as parliamentary approval.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the operation may start very quickly, possibly as soon as July.
