A trial of a wide-scale prostitution case began at the District Court of Oulu on Thursday when eventually all the three accused persons showed up.

The trial has been postponed several times for various reasons until the fifteenth time when finally it kicked off.

Last time the trial collapsed after the main accused failed to show up in the court.

The prosecutor demanded unconditional sentence to be handed to the main accused for pimping. The main accused is also alleged to have gained almost 1.2 million euros from the criminal activity.

The two other persons – a man and a woman – are accused of abetting pimping.

According to the prosecutor, the prostitution ring spread across 15 different locations across the country.

The prosecutor said the people behind the pimping were actively involved in the lookout for rental apartments for commercial sex activities.

In addition to Oulu, apartments were rented in Heinola, Mikkeli, Kokkola, Kuopio and Jyväskylä, among other places.

The defence of the main accused has rejected the pimping allegation. Instead, the defence claimed that the man worked as an assistant in Northern Finland and was himself a victim and had been threatened.

According to the prosecutor, the prostitutes were connected to the clients via a telephone service from rented apartments in Oulu in the so-called operation centres.

The clients were mainly fetched through newspaper advertisements. Estonians, Latvians and Russians took care of clients in nearly 40 apartments. The same prostitutes worked at several locations.

The main accused is also alleged to have organised home visits for the prostitutes.

According to the prosecutor, the two other accused rented apartments for commercial sex business and organised car transportation to ferry the prostitutes from one service point to another.
