The Arctic Challenge Exercise 2015 organised by Norway, Finland and Sweden begins today.

In addition to organising countries, the Netherlands, Britain, France, Germany, Switzerland, the United States and NATO will take part in the exercise. In all, over 100 aircraft will take part in the exercise.

According to the Finnish Defence Forces, the exercise is based on the Cross Border Training North Cooperation between Finland, Sweden and Norway expanding over the national borders.

The flight missions will be carried out in the training areas in the airspace of Sweden, Finland and Norway comprising the main part of the airspace over Northern Sweden, some areas over Finnish Lapland and Northern Norway.

The flight activities will last until the 5th of June.

The Defence Forces said the exercise involves two to four daily waves from 9 am until 9 pm. Flight missions in the mornings and evenings will focus on minor combined training with units stationed at the same base.

Air-to-ground weapons will be released at the firing ranges located in Sweden and Norway. However, Finland’s F/A-18 Hornets will not deploy air-to-ground weapons.

According to the Defence Forces, the aim of the exercise is to train the planning and conducting of combined air operations and to improve capabilities required in multinational cooperation.
