The population of elk has substantially diminished due to increased hunting and the Natural Resources Institute Finland estimates the population of elk at around 83,000 after the autumn of 2014 hunting season.
 
The population of the species had increased by around four percent from the previous year.
 
In May, around 46,000 calves of the species were born in the country.
 
The population of the elk is estimated at around 126,000 before the start of the incoming autumn hunting.
 
The population of the elk has also been affected by road accidents.
