Provincial veterinary physicians were on Saturday involved in intensified inspection of passengers travelling with pets at the Helsinki West Harbour.

The veterinarians inspected the pets import documentation since pets moved across the EU must always be vaccinated and provided with medication.

Special attention is paid to vaccination against rabies and echinococcus medication for pets.

Travellers with pet must be accompanied with pet passport which is marked with pet's medication and the pet must be identified by means of a microchip.

The goal of the inspection is to increase awareness on the pet importation obligation as well as on the risks of diseases.

Pets are increasingly being transported from one country to another which also increases the risks of spread of diseases, according to the veterinarians.

In Finland, commercial operators have to be registered with Finnish Food Safety Authority-Evira.

Official imports of dogs in the last five years have increased five folds to a couple of thousands.

Beside Estonia, Romania and Spain have emerged as other popular import countries.

In recent years, cases of rabies in the EU have mostly been reported in Romania, Poland, Hungary, Greece and Estonia.

Evira recommends that only vaccinated over 16 weeks old puppies should be transferred from one country to another.

The recommendation especially applies to countries where cases of rabies have occurred in the past two years.
