The Finnish Air Force will replace its F-18 Hornets with new multi-purpose fighter jets, according to the proposal of the working group charged with replacing the Hornet fighter jets.

According to the preliminary report submitted to Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö on Thursday, a call for tender for the Hornet replacement will be launched in 2017-2018.

The official procurement of the fighter jet project will, however, kick off in autumn.

According to the working group’s report, the decision to award the tender will be made in the beginning of the 2020s.

The decision to acquire new fighter jets will be made by the next government, Niinistö told the press.

According to the working group chair Lauri Puranen, the acquisition of the fighter jets to replace the Hornets is crucial to the country’s defence.

The life cycle of the current fighter jets will come to an end towards the end of the 2020s.

The report does not disclose the number or model of the possible fighter jets to replace the Hornets.

“The current number of Hornets has responded well to the needs of a country the size of Finland,” Puranen said.

Finland has 62 Hornet fighter jets.
