District Prosecutor Tuire Tamminiemi suspects former mayor of Vantaa Jukka Peltomäki for receiving huge bribes from an architect interested in zoning of Vantaa.

Peltomäki will have to face the court to answer charges of receiving bribes and breach of official position.

According to Tamminiemi, Peltomäki and his inner circle received kickbacks amounting to approximately 200,000 euros.

“The (suspicion) in question is about economic benefits such as affordable housing and foreign trips,” said Tamminiemi.

The briber accused is Leila Tuominen, a Vantaa-based architect and director of Forma-Futura architectural firm.

According to the prosecutor, Tuominen worked either as a designer or a consultant in a number of alterations in which Peltomäki in the course of his official duties was also involved.

The suspected crimes took place between 2006 and 2011. Peltomäki acted first as the deputy mayor and later as the mayor of Vantaa during the stipulated period.

Peltomäki and Tuominen have both denied the accusations. The case will be heard at the District Court of Helsinki at a later date.
