The Defence Forces wants to improve the readiness of troops deployment.

According to the Defence Minister, Jussi Niinistö, hastening of operational readiness is as a result of above all, the crisis in Ukraine.

"Deployment of troops is our touchstone. The Air Force and Navy has a rapid response capability, but the Army is currently a challenge," Niinistö said.

A Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat on Thursday published a report that the Finnish Defence Forces have decided to set a new rapid deployment force.

Some of the reservists have been offered the chance to join the service as soon as the law permits.

Similarly, the number of reservists refresher courses will be evaluated.

According to the chair of Parliamentary Defence Committee Ilkka Kanerva, the transformed security situation has forced the speeding up of the process.

"Finland has to reform its preparedness so that they are at an appropriate level. The legislation is lagging behind this time. The armed forces and reservists contract does not stipulate the exact time on how fast the reservists should be armed," said Kanerva.

According to Kanerva, the matter is still under discussion.

The head of Defence Forces communications, Mika Kalliomaa, revealed the reservists have responded positively towards participating in the rapid deployment force.
