The government on Thursday appointed Seppo Kolehmainen as the new national police commissioner in the place of Mikko Paatero who will go on retirement in August.

Kolehmainen has served as director at the National Police Board and as the rector at the Police University College.

He also had a stint at the police special unit, the “Karhu-ryhmä” also known as the Bear Group.

The new police boss told news agency STT that the post of the head of anti-drug unit should be considered on a fixed-term contract.

He said he wants to expand fixed-term contracts to other important police posts as well.

Kolehmainen also responded carefully to the charges faced by the former head of Helsinki drug police unit, Jari Aarnio.

The case, in his view, has undoubtedly been influenced by fixed-term appointments.

In addition to monitoring, Kolehmainen wanted mechanism to prevent deviations.

"Of course it depends on individuals, but certainly there are specific tasks which could lead to one being subjected to temptation easily," Kolehmainen said.
