Majority of Finns are against cutting of development cooperation aid while about a quarter are in favour, according to a Foreign Affairs Ministry survey conducted by Taloustutkimus.

Last year, 16 percent of Finns held the same opinion in a similar survey with more men showing more support for development cooperation aid cut than women.

The opinions of Finns on the development cooperation aid cut, based on their party affiliation also vary to a great extent.

Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) affiliates rank as the staunchest supporters of cutting development cooperation aid. Nearly half of Finns Party respondents are in favour of cutting the aid.

Nearly one in three Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) adherents support the cut of development cooperation aid appropriations.

Maintaining development cooperation aid appropriations at the current level received most support from Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) respondents with 78 percent of the centrists in favour of maintaining status quo.

The attitude of the Vihreä liitto (Green League) and Suomen Kristillisdemokraatit (Christian Democrats of Finland) supporters towards the aid was also found to be positive.

At the same time when Finns showed inclination towards cutting of development aid cooperation, more Finns consider the aid important. The confidence among Finns on the result of the development cooperation work has also increased.

The survey was conducted in May-June in which nearly a thousand Finns over the age of 15 were interviewed.

The margin of error was +/-3.
