One person was killed and 18 other were injured, three of them critically, in a collision between a passenger car and a bus on Highway 2 at Karkkila on Saturday.
 
The driver of the car died in the accident while 18 others pensioners who were travelling by the bus were injured.
 
According to the police investigation, the passenger car, for reasons unknown, drove into oncoming traffic and collided with the bus head-on. The accident happened in the afternoon.
 
An official of the bus company said the oncoming car was flying down the road on a straight path. The bus tried to dodge. The driver was seriously injured in the accident.
 
The Vaasa-based AB Oskar Haglund Oy bus carrying the pensioner group was travelling from Kristiinankaupunki (Kristinestad) to Helsinki for a four-day holiday.
 
The on-call doctor from Töölö hospital Vincent Van Iterson told STT that three of the most severely injured were transported to Töölö hospital in Helsinki.
 
None of the patients has life-threatening injuries or require serious surgeries, but Van Iterson said they will remain overnight in the hospital for observation.
 
According to the Finnish Transport Agency, the site clearance activities following the accident in Karkkila are over, and traffic along Highway 2 is proceeding normally.
 
Traffic remained completely snapped for more than three hours due to the collision.
