FTimes-STT Report, July 5

The Helsinki District Court has sentenced a 20-year-old Iraqi man to prison for attempting to murder his sister, said a Finnish language newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat.

According to the newspaper, the man was sentenced to two years and one month of imprisonment, without the possibility of early release. The district court judged him guilty of an aggravated attempted crime aimed at life and health, and assault.

The man believes that his 16-year-old sister did not act in accordance with his family’s traditional culture and Islamic religion. According the judgment, the man planned the murder as an “honour killing” to restore his family’s honour.

According to the Helsingin Sanomat, this marks the first such “honour killing” case in Finland. The crime took place in April this year in Helsinki.
