Sixteen thousand broilers perished after a fire broke out in a broiler shed in Mänttä-Vilppula on Sunday.

The thousand square kilometre building was completely destroyed by the fire.

The rescue department had initially informed that 1,600 broilers had been killed in the fire, however, the information has since been revised.

The shed supplied broilers to the food company Atria. Harri Rosenberg, the Primary Production Director at Atria said the accident has not hampered the availability of chickens at the shops.

The number of lost chicken is not particularly high for Atria. The company needs a hundred thousand slaughtered chickens per day.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
