The Gulf of Finland Coast Guard District crime prevention unit confirmed on Thursday that a Russian Air Force aircraft violated the Finnish airspace at the end of June.

The investigation established the violation as an undeniable case. The cause of the airspace violation has, however, not been established.

According to the Border Guard, weather conditions or other air traffic could not have forced the aircraft to breach the Finnish airspace.

The Iljushin-76 military transport flew over the Finnish airspace for almost a minute on June 26. At its deepest, the plane flew about a kilometre inside the Finnish territory.

The violation happened in the sea area near Porvoo.

The aircraft’s transmitter, which was on, relayed the information about its location.

The aircraft was contacted by radio before entering the Finnish airspace and was requested to leave. However, at no point was a response received.

A Finnish Hornet fighter jet was dispatched to identify the object.
