Four out of five drivers respond to their phone whilst driving, according to a traffic safety study report. 
 
The National Police Board said just under half of the drivers involved in an incident, reported that the cause was due to mobile phone use.
 
Use of mobile phone while driving greatly increases the risk of accidents, because it reduces the driver’s attention to traffic.
 
France has recently banned the use of mobile phones whilst driving and a UK-wide ban is under consideration.  
 
In Finland, a mobile phone may be used while driving, but only if the hands-free feature is being utilised. There is no permission to hold the phone while driving.
 
The EU’s Transport Police Organisation has listed four factors that cause death and injury in traffic. They are: inattention, speeding, not using seat belts or other safety devices and drink driving. 
 
The police monitoring this week has highlighted mobile phone violations plus inattention and negligent actions of drivers while on the road.
