Blomqvist who had served as the head of the Mission of Finland to NATO from 1997 to 2002 on Monday said he had pondered much why Russia is hostile to the Western military alliance.
The former ambassador believes the reason behind the resentment was the breakdown of the Soviet Union which Russia takes as a defeat from the West.
According to Blomqvist, the so-called NATO option for Finland has weakened, since it was not put into use and Russia will continue to oppose its use.
“We are living in a time in which that (NATO option) is not appropriate to use,” Blomqvist said at the Suomi Areena event in Pori.
Blomqvist retired in 2002 and prior to becoming ambassador to NATO, he served as the Finnish ambassador to the European Community, the predecessor of the EU, as well as the ambassador to United Kingdom.
