Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö on Wednesday straightway denied a news report on deployment of rapid response forces along the Eastern border, terming the report false and misleading.

The report published by the American weekly Defence News made the allegation, which was taken up later especially by the Russian media.

“We do not have any new forces and not in time of peace has any troop deployment been initiated,” Niinistö said.

According to Niinistö, the Defence News quoted him correctly during the Suomi Areena event, but the background of the news is misleading.

Neither Defence News nor the Russian media had interviewed Niinistö, it was revealed.

“This is typical disinformation which Russia as a result of the Ukrainian crisis has taken an interest in towards other countries,” Niinistö added.

During the Suomi Areena event, issues such as the consequences of the crisis in Ukraine were discussed.
