Finnish military staff officers are already in Rome participating in EUNAVFOR Med, the military crisis management operation against human traffickers in the Mediterranean.

Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö on Wednesday said the officers are preparing for the operation.

According to Niinistö, the country in the upcoming meeting of the president and the Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy will make the final decision on participation in the operation.

“In principle, we have offered a positive stance to the operation whose first phase has been launched,” Niinistö said.

The goal of the EUNAVFOR Med is to seize and destroy human traffickers’ vessels. The initial mandate for the operation which started in June is one year.
