The Ombudsman for Children Tuomas Kurttila wants to get rid of the clause in the Marriage Act which makes it possible for people under the age of 18 to get married under special circumstances.

According to Kurttila, this practice is questionable from the perspective of children rights and interests.

The matter involves a written procedure and the child applying for marriage is not given a hearing.

Over a thousand children tied the knot in the country in the period between 1995 and 2014 and of them a few dozen were girls aged between 14 and 15.

The UN Human Rights Council has requested member states to take measures to prohibit child marriage.
