The components of the three-party alliance government have claimed that the reception of asylum seekers requires additional funding this year due to the strong growth in the number of applicants.

In June’s supplementary budget, parliament granted the reception centres an additional 19.5 million euro fund.

In addition, the Finnish Immigration Service received 0.7 million euros for the hiring of application handlers.

“Forecasts on the number of asylum seekers have drastically increased and that assessment must be addressed financially,” said Deputy Chair of Kansallinen Kokoomus parliamentary group Outi Mäkelä.

More funding is promised in the next supplementary budget for reception centres as well as the Finnish Immigration Service applications process.

As many as 3,400 asylum seekers have already come to Finland this year. For the whole of last year, the total amount was 3,651 persons, of which 1,346 were approved.

“Finland does not decide the number of asylum seekers that apply. There will be expenses, if they come,” Matti Vanhanen, the leader of the Keskusta parliamentary group said.
