A temporary asylum reception centre is being set up in Kirkkonummi, Uusimaa since the Helsinki reception centre has reached full capacity, the Finnish Immigration Service said.

The majority of asylum applications are submitted in the capital city region, and as a result, the reception centres in Helsinki run out of space quickly, the Immigration Service revealed.

Jorma Kuuluvainen, the Director of the Reception Unit at Finnish Immigration Service said Kirkkonummi reception centre will be ready no later than Thursday and will be in operation for three months.

The temporary reception centre will be able to accommodate 250 people.

New reception centres will also be set up in Harjavalta and Tornio, and the operation of both centres will be overseen by the Finnish Red Cross.

Previous estimates by the Immigration Service indicate that nearly 8,000 asylum seekers may arrive in the country this year.

A total of 3,651 people applied for asylum in the country last year.
