FTimes – STT Report, Aug 14

The majority of prisoners believe the prison staff take a dim view of prisoners’ demand for their rights in detention, according to a survey by the Institute of Criminology and Legal Policy.

Only one fifth of the respondents believe the prison staff respond objectively to application for change or complaint.

Two out of three respondents believe the act of complaining could result in negative repercussions such as deterioration of the prison staff’s attitude towards the prisoners.

A total of 522 prisoners answered the questionnaire in June last year.

Inmates at the Riihimäki prison were the most dissatisfied about realisation of their rights.

The most positive response came from the Laukaa open prison.

Not all prisons were included in the survey that covered 14 prisons across the country.
