FTimes – STT Report, Aug 18

The number of deer collisions has increased significantly, reported the Finnish language newspaper Karjalainen.

According to National Police Board statistics, there were 5,300 collisions last year. At the beginning of the decade, there were only 2,800 to 2,900 collisions per year.

In an interview with Karjalainen, National Police Board Inspector General Kari Onninen said the number of crashes involving deer has increased, particularly in Southwest Finland and Häme regions. Populations of white-tailed and roe deer have grown almost everywhere in the country.

Onninen advised that the emergency response centre always be contacted in the event of a collision with a deer. The emergency response centre will decide if it’s necessary to send a team to the site.

“The police’s role is to ensure that the road is still safe, and that any animal involved in a collision does not unduly suffer,” Onninen told the paper.
