The Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) on Wednesday reaffirmed through notification the validity of its endorsement of the anti-racism charter. Political parties signed the charter back in 2011.

The Keskusta also asked other political parties to follow its lead by notifying their reaffirmation.

The party leader of Social Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland), Antti Rinne had earlier proposed that political parties in the countries should re-sign the 1998 Charter of European Political Parties for a Non-Racist Society.

The chair of Keskusta Party, Prime Minister Juha Sipilä said he deemed the notification a good way to show commitment to the declaration.

“This has been under discussion whether it is valid or not. I personally consider that the agreements are valid as long as the names are underneath,” said Sipilä.

Sipilä added that it would be good for each party to make notification that the agreement is valid.

Rinne said the notification is Prime Minister Sipilä’s chosen way to present the matter.

The SDP chair also confirmed that his party will make a notification and stated that the party is still committed to the anti-racism charter.

He expressed the hope that the Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) also makes a notification on its commitment to the charter.

“Hopefully, it would be done by all the parties,” Rinne said.

According to Sipilä, it is often forgotten in the debate that the Finns Party is also a signatory to the charter.

“They have signed it and there is no uncertainty on the party or the position of the government,” Sipilä said.

Alexander Stubb, the chair of the Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) commented on the issue stating that his party remains committed to its fight against racism.
