The US authorities are investigating into the suspected violation of the Finnish airspace by two US C-17 military aircraft on Sunday evening, sources in the US embassy in Helsinki said.

“We are aware of the matter and we are investigating it,” US embassy spokesman Jeff Reneau told the news agency STT on Monday.

The embassy spokesman, however, did not explain the details in this regard.

Meanwhile, the director of communications at the Ministry of Defence, Max Arhippainen on Monday said the suspected violation of the Finnish airspace did not happen at the demilitarised zone of the Åland Islands.

Still, Arhippainen did not precisely pinpoint the location where the violation took place or what was the exact flight route which the aircraft had taken.

According to the defence ministry, two C-17 military transport aircraft flew westward from the east at around 5:00 pm. The suspected violation lasted for about 15 minutes.

Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö through his assistant said he had nothing more to add to the earlier statement issued by the defence ministry on Sunday.

The matter is in the hands of the Finnish Border Guard who are investigating into the suspected violation.

The lead investigator, Rasmus Friman on Monday morning was not yet able to disclose whether contact was established over the radio or if an aircraft was dispatched to identify the object.

Friman also failed to explain in details the location where the suspected violation took place or how deep the planes flew over the Finnish airspace.

Bill Urban, a spokesman at the Pentagon headquarters of the US Department of Defence, told STT earlier on Monday morning that he had no information on the suspected violation of the Finnish airspace.
