The defence forces are going to tighten the physical performance requirements by removing the tiered age scale, according to a report run by the Finnish language newspaper Keskisuomalainen.

“A significant number of conscripts and reservists, as well as current professional soldiers, do not meet our physical performance requirements,” the training manager, Colonel Hannu Hyppönen, told the Keskisuomalainen in an interview.

The change applies to conscripts, full-time soldiers and reservists.

In the future, fitness limits will be drawn up for combat, staff and support positions.

According to the newspaper, the new limits will be applicable regardless of age or gender.

For example, a 25-year-old graduate of Finland’s Special Jaegers must be able to run a Cooper test of 3,000 metres in 12 minutes.

The same milestone must be met, even when he, at the age of 40, would seek to be a Light Infantry Regiment commander.

The Finnish Defence Forces are going to introduce the new fitness limits in 2017.
