Defence minister Jussi Niinistö believes that defence forces implemented solutions will have to be re-evaluated in the future.

Niinistö cites the example of the decisions regarding quantity and location of garrisons.

The Minister in a message on the occasion of Uusimaa National Defence Day asked whether the number of garrisons will be sufficient or not.

He considered it a shortcoming that there are provinces in Finland without their own garrison.

The role of the garrison network, the minister believes, is to defend the nation.

“During this legislative term, the garrison network is unlikely to change, but it is completely possible that we will have to correct errors made by previous governments on this issue,” Niinistö said.

In his opinion, decisions made under severe austerity pressures should be critically assessed.

Niinistö brought up the garrison closures last year as Parliamentary Defence Committee Chairman. He suggested at the time that the decisions to close garrisons could be reconsidered.

In 2012, six Defence Forces garrisons or brigade-level units were abolished.
