The City Council of Keuru on Monday voted against the opening of a reception centre in the municipality.

The council took the decision by 21 votes against 14 votes in blocking the setting up of a refugee reception centre.

Earlier during the day, the municipal board had voted 7-1 against the establishment of the envisaged reception centre in Keuru.

The Finnish Immigration Service had envisaged establishing a reception centre in the town’s former garrison facilities.

The reception centre was initially planned to have accommodation capacity of 500. The reception centre was to employ at least 20 workers, according to earlier plans.

According to a Finnish language daily, the Suur-Keuruu, the police were on guard as the councillors held the meeting.

According to the newspaper, the area around the town hall was, however, peaceful in the afternoon.

The newspaper reported that the councillors had received threatening messages via the social media regarding their decision, thus leading to dispatch of the police surveillance.
