The parliamentary group of the main opposition Suomen ruotsalainen kansanpuolue (Swedish People's Party of Finland-RKP) met in Vaasa on Wednesday
The parliamentary group of the main opposition Suomen ruotsalainen kansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland-RKP) believes the level of the current societal debate in the country must be improved.

In a statement the group urged Prime Minister Juha Sipilä to curb the racist and xenophobic atmosphere in the country.

“We see a clear deterioration. We are concerned because the societal atmosphere is developing negatively,” said Anna-Maja Henriksson, the chair of the parliamentary group.

The party said Interior Minister Petteri Orpo has been clear in his statement. Other political leaders have also focused on the negative side in their statements concerning refugees.

“We have ‘we’ and ‘others’ emotional debate in which racist tendencies are rampant,” observed party leader Carl Haglund.

The party said the country cannot close its borders and that immigration is needed.

Henriksson stressed that Swedish economic development would not have been as strong as it is currently without immigration.

The parliamentary group also criticised the government’s lack of faith in the future.
