Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Thursday urged the country’s people to demonstrate their humanity, their desire to help, and to care for people in need.

Sipilä made the remarks while speaking on the refugee issue at the Paasikivi Society FAQ lecture.

“We are living in a time when our own negative feelings and attitudes can be easily misappropriated. Our welfare society must not become one that flushes people away. In this, we all bear a huge responsibility,” the PM said.

However, he stressed a careful handling of the migrants issue, because, in his words, there will always be those hiding among a large number of newcomers who are not genuinely in need.

The results of the government’s immigration study have not yet been made available, and that is why the prime minister feels it is all the more important that the matter be dealt with responsibly, humanely and based on facts.
